Es endémico de la Isla Robinson Crusoe (ex masatierra) del archipiélago de Juan Fernández
Habita jardines, arbustos y matorrales de la isla.

Existe una marcada diferenciación entre macho yhembra, principalmente por el color de su plumaje, el macho es de color rojizo oscuro y la hembra es de color verde brillante con blanco.

El picaflor de Juan Fernandez está en peligro de extinción. Se cree que no quedan más de setecientos. Las grandes diferencias de color entre los dos sexos de esta ave, crearon confusión entre notables científicos, pues aseguraban que se trataba de dos especies distintas.

Endemic of Robinson Crusoe Island of Juan Fernandez archipelago. Lives in gardens and shrubs zones of the island.
